IB INQUIRERS

A note from Julie Stonehouse

As we move into the last few weeks of the school year, our 5th graders are beginning Exhibition. This is the capstone project of a student’s experience in a Primary Years Program (this is what we are: an IB elementary school). These projects are a culmination of all of our Attributes of the Learner Profile, the Key Concepts that frame our learning, the Approaches to Learning skills that we are developing, and the Transdisciplinary Themes that shape the units our students study each year. Students also engage in some form of Action, based on what they have learned. Basically, the Exhibition is a combination of all elements of an IB school.

The purpose of the Exhibition is to give students an opportunity to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning. They participate in in-depth and collaborative inquiry, supported by their teachers and other adult mentors.

Our 5th graders are currently beginning their research on the topic of their choice. Some of those topics include: clean energy, water pollution, habitat loss for animals, and food waste, to name only a few. The Exhibition will wrap up on Thursday, June 8th, when the students will share their learning with Matoska students and staff. We are very proud of our 5th graders and look forward to celebrating their accomplishments!
